MarsCon 2005
"Galactic Pirates & Mercenaries"
Airport Marriott Hotel
Bloomington, MN
March 4-6, 2005
Hi, this is your friendly neighborhood costumer, The DreamStitcher. I have been shanghaied, er, asked to take on the job of organizing this year's Masquerade.
Some masquerades are known for being very intensely structured, others for being just a walk across the stage. MarsCon Masquerade is somewhere in between. We want to make you, our contestants, look good, and we want you to have fun! And we will do our very best to do so. So bear with us, when we ask that you help us out a little.
When you come to the con, after you go through Convention Registration, PLEASE come to Masquerade Registration, and sign up right away! There will be forms to read, and a form to fill out and return to the Masquerade registration table.
The MarsCon 2005 Masquerade Registration WILL CLOSE at 2 pm Saturday afternoon. (sorry, no exceptions)
If you are entering as a character some people (like the judges) may not recognize, feel free to submit some documentation with your registration. Like, what kind of "documentation", huh? A picture, or even a sketch is good. Heck, you can even submit an action figure (ok, a doll) or even a stuffed animal. (We promise to give it back -- honest!) It will really help the judges, because, the more the judges know about what/who you are trying to portray, the better they can evaluate your efforts.
If you're curious as to how a masquerade is run, or how judges decide who wins, (or who to bribe, and with what ... Hey, we're all a little mercenary this weekend!) come to the Masquerade 101 informational panel Friday night (10 pm in the London Room). Especially if you've never entered a masquerade before (and aren't sure if you're ready) don't be shy! Get in there, and get the info you need to feel confident about entering. We'll answer your questions, give you tips and advice on presentations, and give you some idea of just what's going to happen. We'll let you know when and where this panel will be at the Masquerade Registration table when you come to (get this) register!
If you have any sound effects or music to go with your costume presentation, please please please bring it with you to the Masquerade 101 panel Friday night. We will burn a copy of it, and label it, and give it to the Main Stage technicians, so that way there is no problem of mixed-up or missing sound cues. We will be working with these during the rehearsal on Saturday 6 pm.
If you're really serious about entering the Masquerade, you will need to attend the Saturday afternoon rehearsal (6:00 pm to 7:30 pm Main Stage and London Room-Green Room). We want you all to look good, and a rehearsal is the best way to avoid problems, (like "The mike doesn't work", or "I'm tripping on the stairs", or "Where do I stand?") Show up in complete costume and make-up. (This is when your costume will be judged on workmanship and pictures will be taken. We'll even have a cool backdrop for pictures)
What if your tail, wings, horns, or whatever, start coming off at some point before the masquerade? DON'T PANIC!!!! MarsCon has a portable Costume Emergency First Aid Station that has just what you need for a quick fix (duct tape - of course - hot glue gun, etc.) When not in use in the Green Room (that's the place where all participants will assemble before going on stage) the Costume Emergency First Aid Station will be located in the DreamStitcher's (that's me) party room, Just look for signs around the con advertising the DreamStitcher's party room's location.
We'd like to invite everyone to enter the Masquerade, especially those who have never entered before, and are a little bit shy. Come on, we don't bite (ok, maybe we do, but just nibbles! Honest!) Here's an opportunity to strut your stuff, display your creativity, show what you can do. And, when you're up there, in front of all those other con-goers, feel proud, because they will be applauding YOU!
Thank you,
