In February 1985, Tom Smith picked up a guitar, and to this day the world hasn't quite recovered. One of the most manic people in the history of SF Fandom,
Tom can warm or chill your heart at whim and seemingly pull new songs out of the air. He blends comedy, tragedy, dark romance, popular culture, politics, religion, gaming, movie trivia, current events, and dreadful puns with virtually every genre of music you can imagine. But most startling is the speed with which he does it. He can make up a ditty about virtually any subject on the spot; give him half an hour, and it'll be a keeper. He has improvised entire concerts, and can't seem to let ten minutes on stage go by without making up something no one's ever heard before, including him.
Tom Smith is NOT your ordinary folk-rocker, or even your ordinary comedy musician. With the lyrical complexity of Ashman and Sondheim, the vocal fireworks of Meat Loaf, the comedic timing of Robin Williams, and the dynamic physique of the Skipper from Gilligan's Island, the only thing he won't do is be boring. No one alive combines the musical chops, the bizarre yet somehow plausible premises, the catchy tunes, and the barrage of godawful puns that Tom brings to the table. And no one is likelier to break your heart with one song, your head with the next, and your funny bone with the one after that.
Tom's got ten albums, dozens of other unrecorded songs, twelve Pegasus Awards for Excellence in Filk, an animated music video ("Enterprising Man" from the second Babylon Park video), a spot in the Filk Hall of Fame, and thousands of stunned, delighted onlookers in his wake.
Tom's concerts are always high-energy, and because the news of the day usually has him cranked up (or off) about something, he usually has at least two or three new pun-filled ditties, and if he doesn't he'll make something up on the spot. His turns at the late-night filks get even more insane, because his philosophy is that if you've been up all day at the con the LAST thing you need is some monotonous, gore-filled dirge to put you to sleep, and he starts dragging out the really bizarre stuff, and he starts doing voices, and call-backs, and quotes from cartoons or The Muppet Show or Rocky Horror or MST3K, and... look, trust us, it just gets wild.
