MarsCon Masquerade Monthly Newsletter for October and November 2005

Hi, your friendly neighborhood Masquerade Director, doing her best "White Rabbit" impression (you know, where I run around in a tizzy, looking at my pocket watch and muttering "I'm late, I'm late, I'm late (again)".

October and November were soooo busy, I didn't get a chance to write up a monthly newsletter. I attended ValleyCon, saw lots of friends, and had a good time. I even got to meet Kevin Sorbo, and presented him with a miniature version of his Andromeda uniform jacket for his new baby. (His wife had just given birth the weekend before the con). I was dressed as Edna Mode during the con, and, as he took a good look at me, he exclaimed "Are you for real?!" (Must have made an impression, huh?)

Had a very good room party at ValleyCon, and some very good discussions - about cons in general, costumes (of course) and a rather thought provoking discussion concerning weapons policies at SF convention. Something to think about, as many con-goers do walk around with all sorts of armament (swords, clubs, guns, etc.) Some conventions ban any sort of 'real' weapon. Some rely on the participants to police themselves. Some have 'peace-bonding' policies. Some cons allow real swords, yet ban anything that looks like a real gun.

As a previous Masquerade contestant, judge, and director (and current director) I am personally much more impressed with contestants who construct their own props, as well as their own costumes. Even if your final result isn't perfect, judges will frequently award points simply because you made the attempt, rather than just went out and bought the prop. I encourage all who enter to give making your own 'guns', 'swords', etc. at try. (I’LL be impressed!)

That said, while I am of the opinion that 'weapons' made by con-goers are vastly superior, in terms of creativity, to real weapons or purchased weapons, I can't argue with the fact that not all of us have the skill or the means to work with welded metal, molded plastics, etc, Therefore, purchased weapons will be allowed.

But, the rules for weapons entered in the Masquerade will follow those for the general con. Which means they will need to be peace-bonded, unable to be extracted from your possession by others. They will also not be able to fire any projectiles of any kind. And you will be required to sign a liability release. The Masquerade, and the Con itself will not be responsible at all, for any lost, stolen or damaged weapons or props. (So keep that in mind while you’re thinking about bringing your very expensive sword, dagger, ray-gun, etc.)

The MarsCon weapons policy is simple, and fair, and very sensible. It can be found in last year's program, and it should be on this website. [webmaster's note: here it is.] Refer to the weapons policy, and, if you want to be sure you weapon will be allowed at the con, run it by the people in OPS first before entering the con. Less hassle that way.

Also please send in any costume related ideas you have for panels. We still have some free blocks of time in the Masqueade Lounge. Still looking for volunteers to staff the Lounge (you don't have to sew).

Well, I'm off ("I'm late, I'm late, I'm late, I'm laaaaaaatttttttteeeee!")
