Hi, this is your friendly neighborhood SPIDERMAN! No, not really, it’s just the friendly neighborhood MarsCon Masquerade Director again. As usual, things are so busy that December went by before I could write up another monthly newsletter. So, forget December, here’s January’s.
Only 8 weeks to go before MarsCon 2006. So get going on those costumes! The MarsCon theme this year is “ Things That Go Bump in the Night”! So scary / horror / creepy, etc. themed costumes are suggested, but not required! Hey, if you’ve always wanted to appear in public dressed as Captain Kirk, Willy Wonka, or the Easter Bunny, go for it!
Great news! Our newest guest of honor, Gigi Edgley (Chiana, from Farscape) has agreed to be a Masquerade judge! We also have two great local judges, Michelle Clark and Todd Coss (who will be our workmanship judge). If you’ve never been in a masquerade before, and are a bit nervous before judges, take heart! Make sure you attend MarsCon’s panel, “Masquerade 101” on Friday night. Previous judges and entrants will be taking questions on how to enter a masquerade, tips, tricks, advice. Come with your questions and concerns, we will be there to give you all the help we can!
Even if you can’t bring yourself to enter the Masquerade (and we hope you do!) feel free to come in costume. (That’s half the fun of a con). The Masquerade judges will be wandering the halls during the convention, and passing out HALL COSTUME CONTEST awards. These are recognition for a great costume, a job well done. It means the judges think you have a great costume. These are also meant to encourage you to enter the Masquerade. If you wear more than one costume during the convention, you could also win more than one Hall Costume award. (Unlike other masquerades or cosplay contests, MarsCon does not prohibit hall costume award winners from entering the Main Masquerade, so go ahead and enter!) Need for info or ideas, just check out the MarsCon website!
When you get to the convention, make sure you check out the program guides for all the great panels. And remember to check out the Masquerade activities. Besides the Friday night “Masquerade 101”, there will also be panels on prop making, etc. And be sure to check out the “Masquerade Lounge” on the top floor, open during most of the convention. Stop in and hang out with others who love costuming!
So, as the Masquerade Director, I strongly encourage all of you to sign up for the Masquerade! Come, dress yourself up as your favorite fantasy, your inner demon, your wildest dreams! AND ENTER!
Looking forward to seeing you all.
