MarsCon 2006 Masquerade Judging Guidelines

Masquerade Awards Categories

Presentation

Child:
age 12 or younger
Novice:
has never entered a costume contest, or entered less than 3 contests and has never won a previous costume contest
Journeyman:
has entered 3 or more costume contests before, won or placed in any previous contests in the novice categories.
Master:
has won or placed in Journeyman categories before or is a (semi) professional

Workmanship

Child:
age 12 or younger who constructed his/her own costume
Novice:
has never constructed and entered a costume in a contest before or has entered less than 3 contests, has never won in any workmanship category
Journeyman:
has entered a costume in 3 or more costume contests, has won or placed in previous contests in the novice workmanship categories.
Master:
has entered a costume which has won or placed in journeyman categories, or is a (semi) professional costumer.

Best Con Theme Award

best attempt to envision the current convention overall theme

Best In Show Award

overall favorite of judges and audience

Masquerade Judging Criteria

Presentation

Identity:
Is the character easily recognizable for what it is supposed to be? Can the character portrayed be readily named? Does the costume fit the image?
Presence:
Does the contestant capture the character onstage? Does the contestant project well, easily heard? Does the contestant connect with the audience, is there 'rapport'?
Audience appeal:
how well does the audience respond to the character?

Workmanship

Aesthetic:
Is the character easily recognizable / identifiable? Are the pertinent design details present? Is the concept complete, do all the elements work together? If the concept is original. how successfully does the costume communicate the concept?
Technical:
Is the costume well constructed? Are there loose threads, or rips or tears, Pieces don't match up, poor use of materials? Does the costume fit well, any gaps, folds, or strained seams? Does it capture only the general feel of the character, or are the particular details present?(extra consideration for difficult materials, and/or techniques).
