Art Show Programming

pix of Duchamp piece Found Art Exhibit: Also known as the Duchamp piece, this is the audience participation piece that began with MarsCon 1999. Contrary to last year, however, this is a no-holds barred piece. No restrictions, just a humble request that good judgement be used.

Young Artist Exhibit: This exhibit is meant to showcase the incredible emerging talents of science fiction / fantasy. Artists under the age of 18 are encouraged to display their work in the show this year and will be give special hanging space. The Young Artists are subject to the same guidelines as the adult artists, and parents are welcome to serve as agents.

Young Artist Reception: Any young artist who follows their muse always wonders two things. Well, they wonder about a lot of things, but two questions are foremost: first "am I good enough?" and second "how do the pros do it?" At the Young Artist Reception, the adult artists will do their best to answer these questions, as well as provide the kind of creative motivation they may not have received when they were the ones asking, "am I good enough and how do the pros do it?"

Art Tour: This Minicon tradition is now part of Marscon. Join our guide, local artist Denise Garner, and other artists displaying in the show to tour the artwork.

Art Show Guidelines

MarsCon is a Science Fiction / Fantasy convention, and will be accepting multiple-genre work.

Rating: The show is rated PG-13 to R. No X-rated work will be hung in the show.

Artwork

Display Fees: $0.50 per piece walk-in art. $1.00 per piece mail-in / not for sale art.
"Not for Sale" (NFS) art may be entered in the Art Show and is subject to the same hanging fees.
Display Space is available on a first-come, first serve basis. Artists who help set up the Art Show will be awarded first choice of display space. Be prepared to share panels / tables with other artists. Prints hung in the display space will be charged a hanging fee.
Walk in art is accepted, space permitting, until 5:00 p.m. Saturday (May 12).
Mail-In art is accepted at the expense of the artist. Please contact Nora Leverson to make arrangements. All art should be received by April 30, and artists are required to send hanging fees and sufficient funds to cover return shipment and insurance. All outstanding fees will be deducted from artist sales. Any artwork received without a control sheet will not be hung but returned to the artist(s) with the hanging fees. Mail-in art should be sent in sturdy reusable containers.
Commission: MarsCon will take a 10% commission on total sales.
Auction: This is a five-bid art show. There will be a voice auction on Saturday for any pieces that receive up to five bids. Silent auction will commence until the art show closes Saturday night.
Signage: Business cards or a name card may be placed with your work free of charge.
Print Shop: There will be a print shop for prints and reproductions. No more than 20 copies of any one art piece (size does not matter). No more than 20 different art works. Prints beyond these limits will not be displayed or sold. No handling fee is charged for print shop items. These are sold by direct sale, not by bids. Each piece in the print shop must be marked with individual prices.
Leftovers: Any unsold non-mail-in art remaining after the Art Show is closed may be claimed by contacting Nora Leverson. There will be no charge to the artist for returning unclaimed art.
Security: No photography will be allowed in the Art Show Room. All bags and large coats or cloaks must be checked at the Art Show Control Desk. When the Art Show is not open, the room will be locked and only the Art Show Coordinator may obtain access.
Payment for sales will be mailed to the artists 30 days following the convention.
