2025 Notable Presenters

C. M. Alongi
Christina M. Alongi is a sci-fi/fantasy author and content creator, best known for her ongoing TikTok series CaFae Latte. Her debut novel Citadel was nominated for the 2023 Minnesota Book Award, and The Official CaFae Latte Cookbook (written alongside her mother and fellow author Maryjanice Davidson) hit several Amazon bestseller lists. This year, she has two fantasy novels coming out: The Witch Who Trades with Death (by Angry Robot Books) and the long-anticipated CaFae Latte novel Heart of Iron. She lives in Minneapolis, MN, and when she’s not writing or creating, she’s getting tangled in yarn projects and protecting her furniture from her roommates’ evil cats. You can check out her website www.cmalongi.com and find her on social media.

Cheryl Arko
Cheryl Arko is a science fiction author, senior data scientist, and seasoned dog trainer. During her long career in IT and medical data analysis, she has co-authored three peer-reviewed papers published in medical journals. Her life-long passion for training and competing with her beloved Airedale Terriers has led to national rankings, and she has contributed as a guest columnist for the American Kennel Club Gazette.

She channels her creativity into writing stories that take her to the stars, imagining who we might find out there. With this book, she invites readers to come along for the ride to visit new worlds and their people. To explore what makes us different—and what makes us the same. And to discover the inherent good that exists in the universe to balance against darkness, no matter how far we travel.

Cheryl and her four-footed friends enjoy life in a tiny one-level house nestled within thirty acres of serene Minnesota pine trees. Her days are filled with laughter, inspiration, and the occasional mischief brought on by her faithful canine crew.

T. Aaron Cisco
2024 Guest of Honor.
T. Aaron Cisco is an Amazon Bestselling author, a multi-award-winning TV producer, and even a former touring musician. Working primarily in the genres of contemporary Afrofuturism, science fiction, and fantasy, Cisco crafts narratives that are as captivating as they are groundbreaking. Cisco sees his work as a megaphone for the overlooked and marginalized—giving voice to characters, themes, and stories that challenge stereotypes and upend prejudices. When you dive into a T. Aaron Cisco tale, you’re not just reading a story; you’re engaging with an art form that treats identity and equality as its narrative backbone. From his debut work, Teleportality, to his latest enigmatic pieces like The UnbanishedThe Unrested, and Before Asleep You Fall, you’re stepping into worlds where the merit of each character—be they male, female, white, or non-white—is not up for debate; it’s simply a given.

If you find Cisco’s storytelling unusually concise yet potent, there’s a reason: His origins in the frenetic world of television have sharpened his craft to a fine point. Back in his news and talk show days—and later as a writer of snappy marketing copy and compelling commercials—Cisco learned to captivate an audience in a handful of minutes. This experience has shaped his unique literary style, making each book a tightly woven tapestry of intricate but compact storytelling. Add to this a childhood love affair with the works of Edgar Allan Poe, a master of the novella, and you get a literary style that delivers each story like a well-aimed arrow; short, piercing, and on target.

From Minneapolis by way of Chicago, Cisco has achieved much, not just as an author but as a cultural influencer. His works have frequently adorned Amazon’s bestseller lists, with The UnbanishedRod String Nail Cloth: An Afrofuturist Mixtape, and Black Nerd Blue Box: The Wibbly Wobbly Memoirs of a Lonely Whovian clinching the number one spot. But his influence extends far beyond the printed word. His work has been showcased across various media platforms, including NBC, ABC, KSTP, TPT, Insight News, Axis of Logic, and Twin Cities Geeks. A collection of accolades decorate his career—local Emmy awards, international speaking engagements, the MN Society of Professional Journalists Page One Award, a distinguished spot on Hennepin County Libraries’ Minnesota Black Authors list, and a title as one of the Ten Black Change-Makers Influencing the Twin Cities Arts Scene. More than anything, T. Aaron Cisco is an ardent advocate of the simple yet profound concept he calls “squee”—the utter joy and excitement that comes from sharing stories and life with others…

Kathryn Sullivan has been writing science fiction and fantasy since she was 14 years old. Having read her father’s collection of sf and fantasy, she started writing her own. The world set up in
The Crystal Throne has been developing since then. Some of the short stories escaped into fan zines, print zines and ezines, but those were collected into Agents & Adepts. And now even more have been added to the expanded Agents, Adepts & Apprentices. She has an essay in the Hugo winning Chicks Dig Time Lords and reviews in Outside In and Outside In Boldly Goes: 117 New Perspectives on 117 Classic Star Trek Stories. “Search and Rescue” and “The Oracle of Cilens” are just a couple of her short stories. Please bring one or more books you would like to donate, and feel free to take a book yourself. And if you don’t have a book to share, that’s ok, come and find a new one! Any unclaimed books will be donated at the end of the convention to the Charity Auction on Sunday morning in the main ballroom.

Oasis for Youth organization logo

We are excited to announce that one of our 2024 Charity Auction recipients will be Oasis For Youth!

Oasis for Youth aims to be the trusted resource committed to elevating youth in their own community. Oasis was launched in 2010 by a group of community members who recognized that an alarming number of suburban youth were facing homelessness and did not have access to targeted services within their own community. Oasis was the first suburban drop-in center in the Twin Cities metro area. Today, Oasis supports more than 450 young people annually.

The Gordon Dickson Memorial Scholarship Fund is another charity that MarsCon’s charity auction will benefit. The GDMSF was established in 2002 for three purposes:

  • To honor Gordy Dickson, local fan and science fiction and fantasy pro writer who died in 2001.
  • To collect money to send potential new writers to the Clarion Workshop for SF and fantasy writers, or some other workshop. (Gordy always encouraged new writers.)
  • To promote accord in Twin Cities fandom by having a project that various fan clubs and individual fans can work on together.

Bid on stuff!
There is usually at least one treasure that you will really want—maybe an autographed picture of one of the Guests of Honor, a toy, some tickets to a movie, a poster, some books—so show up, bid, and remember that what you spend is going to support worthwhile causes!

SUN Noon: Grand Archenemy
This has been an event that we have started at MarsCon and has been a fan favorite. This is a One vs Many event where a member of our staff will take on all comers to reign victorious! Our largest event was 1 v 13 and the largest one by our staff is 1 v 9. Let us see if we can break both of those records this year!

Open Gaming Library
As usual we will have our large and varied gaming library for use at the convention with plenty of play space. Also feel free to bring games to share as well.

A small sampling of games we will have available are: Ticket to Ride, Zombie Dice, Magic the Gathering, Star Wars Unlimited, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Robo Rally, Formula Day, Warhammer Munchkin, Starfarers of Catan, King of Tokyo, Splendor, Lords of Eaterseep, SOL, Beyond the Sun, and many others. Some of these games were kickstarter only and not released to the general public.

Matt McMillan and the rest of the Twin Cities Game Fest team will be happy to meet old and new conventions friends. Additionally the wonderful people at Midwest Jedi are helping to sponsor us this year. We look forward to seeing you in gaming!

Masquerade banner, picture of a green alien wearing a cape and a mask
Entering Masquerade is easy! Here’s how:
  • Sign up in person during con in our Masquerade Lounge (2nd floor) OR print out the registration form below and turn it in to the Masquerade Lounge when you come to con.

  • Come to the mandatory Masquerade orientation at 11am on Saturday 3/8, give us your registration form. If you’re entering a judged category, you will pick a judging time during orientation.

    That’s it! Easy!

Participating in Masquerade Rules and Info (all rules and info are subject to change up until the Masquerade)

Masquerade is divided into two categories: Judged Entries and Exhibition Only (non-judged).

Judged Entries:

  • There are 5 categories for judged entries: Novice, Journeyman, Master, Performance/Skits and Youth.
  • There are 6 award categories: Best Novice, Best Journeyman, Best Master, Best Youth, Best Performance, and Best in Show. Additionally there may be up to 3 Judge’s Choice awards.
  • Judging for Novice, Journeyman & Master will be based on workmanship and stage presence (poised, confident, have attitude, and engaging with the judges and audience).
  • Judging for Performance only will be based only on your skit/dance, not your costume.
  • Solo entries will have up to 30 seconds on stage and groups will have up to 1 minute.
  • For Performance/Skit you can do a skit or short dance to act out your character. Any dialogue or music must be pre-recorded.
  • For whatever kind of performance you choose to do, you’ll want to have stage presence and be as engaging as possible with the audience and the judges!
  • In order to be eligible to win Novice, Journeyman, Masters, or Best In Show, your costume must be 75% made by you from raw materials using any number of techniques. Your costume may also be constructed by significant modification of existing garments, objects, materials, etc. The remaining 25% allows for support garments or hard to construct components that are included in your cosplay (footwear, belts, socks, gloves, crinoline hoop, etc).
  • For Performance/Skits your costume can be made by you, store bought, or commissioned, since you will only be judged on your skit or dance, and not your costume.

Exhibition Only Entries:

  • Exhibition only (or “Runway”) costumes are non-judged, just for fun to show off! They can be store bought, commissioned, made by you, etc.
  • Individuals will have 30 seconds to walk on, strike some poses, and walk off. Groups will have up to 1 minute.

All Entries (Judged and Non-Judged Exhibition Only):

  • Minimum age for Masquerade entry is 6 years old, and MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Ages 6 – 14 will be in the youth category for judging, and will be judged separately from all other entrants. Youth category is not eligible for Novice, Journeyman, Master, or Best in Show awards. ALL entrants 14 and under MUST have a parent/guardian present at all times during all portions of Masquerade.
  • For youth entrants ages 6-14, a parent/guardian/someone else can assist with your costume design & construction.
  • For all other (judged) entrants ages 15+, you must have made your costume without assistance to be eligible for a Best Novice, Best Journeyman, Best Master or Best in Show award.
  • Group entries are limited to 6 members.
  • ALL Masquerade participants including parents/guardians must be registered for MarsCon, and must adhere to all MarsCon Policies.
  • Your MAX presentation time on stage is up to 30 seconds for individuals and up to 1 minute for groups. You don’t have to take all that time if you don’t need it.
  • Exhibition-only costumes are not eligible for any of the judged awards
  • Retail store bought costumes or costumes that are commissioned are exhibit only or Performance only. They are not eligible for Best Novice, Journeyman, Master or Best in Show.
  • If you’ve won Best In Show at MarsCon for a specific costume, you cannot compete in Masquerade with that same costume, but we’d love to have you do Exhibition only to show off your winning costume! Costumes that won at other costume contests are fully eligible to compete at MarsCon Masquerade.
  • No live dialogue on stage. Your entire stage presentation (dialogue, music, etc.) must be pre-recorded.
  • Props and costumes that are oversized or present mobility issues should be discussed with the Masquerade director during orientation, since you need to be able to get on and off stage without injury to yourself, others, or destruction to your surroundings. All props must follow MarsCon Props Policies.
  • Stage fighting may be approved, but must be run past the Masquerade director in advance.
  • No smoking or smoke effects whatsoever on stage.
  • Handler: each entrant may have ONE handler to assist them in the green room. They may walk you up to the stage entrance, but NOT go on stage with you.
  • Masquerade is rated PG-13 (parental guidance advised). No nudity, and if your costume is tight, overly revealing, etc, you must have proper support/modesty garments underneath.
  • Food in the green room: be mindful of any food or drink you have with you- you don’t want to spill on someone else’s costume or bring something in that could cause a food allergy to someone else. NO open drink containers, everything must have a lid or cap!
  • Liability Waiver Form: EVERYONE will need to sign the Liability Waiver Form at the mandatory Masquerade orientation on Saturday.

Masquerade Participation Schedule:

  • Saturday 11amOrientation – There is a mandatory orientation for everyone who is participating in Masquerade (judged and exhibition).  We’ll talk about the Masquerade schedule, judging, (and exhibition only), have you sign up for a judging time for judged entries, and answer any questions you have. Your registration form and Liability Waiver need to be completed and turned in to the Masquerade directors at orientation. Any pre-recorded sound/music you have will be handed in at that time (bring in a copy of your soundtrack on a USB thumb drive – .mp3 preferred, but .wav will also work).  After orientation, all are welcome to stay for a presentation on how to enter a costume contest.
  • Saturday 5pm – Workmanship Judging begins- all contestants being judged for workmanship were assigned a time during orientation. Please come to judging in full costume, including any props, full makeup, etc..
  • Saturday 7pm – Rehearsal for EVERYONE. This will be a quick walkthrough for everyone (Judged costumes AND Exhibit). You do not have to perform your full skit/routine on stage if you have one, but rather, this is a rehearsal walk on and off stage, and a double check on your tech (music or voiceover) to make sure we have the right audio cues, and that everything is working correctly.
  • Saturday 8pm – The Masquerade show begins!
-Just before the contest, all Masquerade entrants will be lined up in order of their appearance on stage, and then they will be led back stage, where they will be called onto the stage one at a time by the emcee.
-When your time is done on stage, contestants will exit through the backstage and go to the back of the audience where they can watch the rest of the contest. After all entrants have been on stage, there will be a short 15 to 20 minute intermission while the judges tally the scores. During this intermission, all contestants will return to the Masquerade Lounge green room.
-After intermission when the judging concludes, the winners will be called out from the green room and escorted back stage, where they will wait to be called up for the awards. All other entrants may go to the back of the audience to watch the awards.
-After awards are over, winners will be asked to go to the photo backdrop in the hallway, where their pictures will be taken. Photos will be posted on the MarsCon website along with a list of the winners.

For all things cosplay and costuming, check out our Masquerade Lounge that will be PACKED with costume related panels and presentations!

Cosplay is a fun and exciting component of the MarsCon experience, but not required! We want everyone to feel at home at con, whether you're in or out of costume.

If you do choose to wear a costume, here's some advice that can help you get the most out of your cosplay experience.

Whether you’re wearing a hall costume just for fun, or entering it in our Masquerade competition, we want you and those around you to feel safe and have an enjoyable time!  We humbly offer some helpful advice and pro tips when planning your costume:

  • Think about your costume’s silhouette/footprint (if it’s large, oversized, has wings, or large props, etc) and how you’ll navigate through crowded hallways or party rooms.
  • Does your costume have pockets or someplace to carry your money, ID, phone, etc.? If not, can you include some kind of accessory or bag that maybe goes with your costume, to put things in?
  • Footwear can help elevate your look (especially if they’re heels!), but are they comfy enough to walk in for hours or even all day? Our pro cosplayers often bring a second pair of comfy shoes to change into if their feet start getting sore.
  • Buttons fall off, wings get bent, and props break…it happens! It’s always a good idea to pack a custom repair kit (needle and thread color that matches your costume, a hot glue gun, duct tape, zip ties, etc.).

At Marscon, we take accessibility and inclusivity very seriously. As a small non-profit, we are resource constrained, yet we’re doing all that we can to make our website as accessible as possible. In that spirit, we’ve licensed Max Access, a popular accessibility overlay. Though overlays do not resolve all accessibility issues as measured by the WCAG criteria, they can help substantially to improve the experience and outcome for people with varying types of impairment and disability.

To use the Max Access overlay, locate and click on the small accessibility icon that looks like this on whatever device you’re using. (usually found either at the top or bottom of the page).

Additionally, our webmaster reviews the WCAG criteria and makes accessibility enhancements to the website however and whenever possible.

MarsCon would like to thank Max Access for partnering with us, and for their awesome accessibility overlay on our site.

Words from the President of FenSF

Gentlebeings:

FenSF, Inc [the Fans Educational Network for Science Fiction], is a nonprofit organization devoted to teaching individuals how to promote and run amateur science fiction and gaming conventions. In furtherance of our educational goals, we sponsor a yearly amateur science fiction/fantasy convention called MarsCon, conduct convention training sessions, provide outreach and assistance to other fan-run conventions, and engage in fund raising activities to raise money for convention efforts and increase public awareness of amateur science fiction and gaming conventions in general.

Each year, the FenSF board looks for leadership proposals from fans like you who have an interest in running MarsCon. It is the duty of FenSF to award leadership for MarsCon to a core group of volunteers. To give you a clearer idea of what leading the convention entails, we have provided detailed information on these subjects:

We hope that this information is helpful to you and that, at the very least, it encourages you to volunteer and become more active in MarsCon and other amateur science fiction conventions in the future.

Time Line for MarsCon Leadership Proposals

Using MarsCon 2018 as an example, the approximate time line for submitting proposals, considering them, and awarding leadership is as follows:

May 2016:
First heads up for letting bids for MarsCon 2018
June 2016:
Let bids for 2018; Bidders assemble leadership teams
July 2016:
FenSF board reviews leadership proposals for MarsCon 2018
Aug 2016:
Award leadership for MarsCon 2018
Sept-Jan, 2017:
MarsCon 2018 Exec starts to assemble convention
Jan 2017:
Fix Guests of Honor and other details so that MarsCon 2018 may be advertised at MarsCon 2017
Feb-Mar, 2017:
MarsCon 2017 happens; Registration process for MarsCon 2018 begins
Feb-Mar, 2018:
MarsCon 2018 happens; Registration process for MarsCon 2019 begins
Etc, etc, ad infinitum.

Leadership Proposal Bidding Criterion

Purpose: The information below is designed to assist you in creating a leadership proposal or bid to run a future amateur science fiction convention: MarsCon.

Philosophy: We wish to create an inviting, fun atmosphere in which various aspects of science fiction and fantasy may be promoted, discussed, and enjoyed. We need to both learn and teach the various jobs required to produce such a convention. It is the duty of the Con Chair (person) to do the following: Produce a profit for the corporation to be rolled into subsequent years; Document all meetings and teaching activities; Keep track of the funds; And at all times bring honesty, honor and dignity to MarsCon and FenSF.

How to Start: You may ask anybody to be on your convention committee (ConCom). Several bidders may ask the same person to be in any position. If multiple bidders ask the same person to be on their committee, even in the same capacity, so much the better. All people on ConCom are volunteers, but you must ask everyone and get at least a verbal commitment. We are looking for people skills, organizational and planning skills, and leadership.

Required: The following MINIMUM information, which sets forth the core of the Convention Executive Committee, is required on all leadership proposals:

Con Chair (Name and Address) [The final authority]
Treasurer (Name)
Hotel Liaison (Name)
Operations and Safety Chief (Name)

Optional: The following information is desirable, but optional for all leadership proposals:

Vice Chair (Name and Address)
Assistant Treasurer (Name)
Assistant Hotel Liaison (Name)
Assistant Operations (Name)
All other ConCom members you may have established at the time of the bid.

Other Information: A leadership proposal should also contain the following information

Convention Name:
MarsCon
Convention Theme:
Proposed theme, if known
Convention Date:
Proposed date if known
Location:
Hotel if known
Time Line:
Meeting and publication schedule, based on 18 month cycle
Budget:
Preliminary budget based on last years of budgets
New Events:
Extravaganzas or special events. If special events require extra funding, how is this to be done.
Proposed Guests:
Types of Guests, number, specific names if known
Statement or Essay:
Why I want to run the convention. (This is your opportunity to give us some idea of your style, creativity, and enthusiasm. Style counts. Have fun with it.)

Attach any other pertinent information you feel will help us make a decision.

Submitting your proposal: Leadership proposals must be delivered to the FenSF Board. The preferred method of delivery is to send by mail or deliver in person at an official meeting three hard copies of your proposal.

Accessibility

MarsCon is dedicated to providing a welcoming environment for all attendees, regardless of ability or special needs. To achieve this, we need your help. If at any time you notice a condition which may be unsafe or limit someone’s ability to participate and enjoy the convention, please let a staff member know or come to the Bridge (1st floor, near the hotel front desk). If you need help with accessing part of MarsCon, we will help. The MarsCon Safety Team are all volunteers who are here to help with accommodations whenever possible, to make everyone’s experience fun and entertaining.

Alcohol

The legal drinking age in Minnesota is 21. Alcohol is not permitted in any of the function spaces. Individuals and groups hosting parties are responsible for ensuring no alcohol is served to minors or served by minors. Party hosts are responsible for checking identification. Parties caught serving alcohol to minors will be shut down. Any MarsCon attendee caught serving alcohol to minors will be ejected from the convention, and any minor caught with alcohol will also be ejected. Anyone hosting a party needs to understand that it is Minnesota state law to check a person’s legal I.D. every single time you serve them a drink. We expect this law to be obeyed at our parties. Our MarsCon Safety Team will be checking for this, specifically.

Badge Policy

Your convention badge is necessary for your participation in the convention, it allows you access to the convention and indicates that you are a member in good standing. However, MarsCon reserves the right to revoke the membership of any member. Lost Badge/change badge Policy: Replacement badges are $5 plus the single day rate, but you get all but $5 refunded if you return the lost badge. If you want to change something on your badge, the cost is $5.

Covid Policy

It is strongly recommended, but not required, that all attendees be vaccinated for Covid.  It is also recommended, but not required, that attendees wear a face mask. This is especially important if:

  • You had symptoms or a positive test 5-10 days before the convention.
  • You were exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the 10 days prior to the convention.
  • If you have concerns about COVID-19 and/or the indoor air quality.

Please be aware that individual rooms may set their own mask requirement and are allowed to restrict access to anyone not following the policy. These rooms will have signage at the door and may not be listed below. Currently, the following room/rooms has/have decided to require masks for entry and will have signage at the door. This list may change:  Creative Planet

Additionally, please be aware of and respect the personal boundaries of your fellow attendees.

If you are not feeling well or are experiencing symptoms, please respect the safety of others and stay home and take care of yourself.

Please note that our Covid-19 policy is subject to change.

For additional information on how you can protect yourself against respiratory viruses, please visit the CDC’s Respiratory Virus guidance page

City, County, State and Federal Laws

Please remember that whatever applies outside the convention, still applies inside the hotel and convention. All attendees must follow all city, county, state and federal laws.

Costumes

We don’t want to censor your creativity, but please, no public nudity. There will be other groups in the hotel during MarsCon and we would like to maintain a good relationship with the Hilton Minneapolis/St Paul Aiport Mall of America. We are a family-friendly convention, so please plan your costumes with that in mind. Costume does not equal consent.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, & Accessibility

MarsCon values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility. MarsCon does not discriminate against race, color, culture, national origin, disability, gender, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual orientation, religion, age, body size, or appearance. No matter what corner of the galaxy you’re from, all aliens are welcome!

Hanging Posters/Signage

Hilton Minneapolis/St Paul Airport Mall of America is allowing signage on designated sign boards and inside sleeping rooms, party rooms and function rooms. If you post anything in the hotel, the only tape you may use is Scotch Safe Release Painter’s Masking Tape 2080. If you need tape, please see the Bridge (1st Floor, near the hotel front desk). Don’t break the Hotel, please.

Harassment Policy

The Fans Educational Network for Science Fiction (FENSF) and MarsCon are dedicated to providing a comfortable and harassment-free environment for everyone at MarsCon and other FENSF-sponsored events. In order to offer a welcoming and safe space for everyone, all attendees are required to be respectful of all others. Do not use slurs or derogatory comments about a person, group or category of people. This could include comments based on characteristics such as (but not limited to) actual or perceived race, national origin, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, pronouns, physical appearance, age, religion, ability, family structure, or marital status, or socioeconomic class.

FENSF wants its events to be safe and enjoyable for everyone. By attending a FENSF event, all individuals are required to abide by FENSF anti-harassment rules.

Remember, by attending a FENSF event, including MarsCon, you are agreeing to create a space that feels as safe as possible. This is done by respecting others’ space—be it physical or social.

Hate Groups

Any representation or iconography of any hate group (included but not limited to: Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, Proud Boys, Westboro Baptist Church or as listed on the Southern Poverty Law Center website as a current or active hate group) is expressly prohibited. Discrimination or prejudiced behavior is not tolerated by CONvergence. Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

Physical Space

Do not physically harm or endanger other people.

Other people or their personal effects should not be touched—this includes hair, clothing, assistive devices, bags, and service animals—without an express invitation/permission. If physical contact is wished, express this verbally or with a friendly gesture, and do not proceed without a positive verbal or physical response. Holding a hand out for a handshake and waiting for the other person to reciprocate is a good example.

Sharing space with other people requires active demonstrations of respect and empathy. Good examples can be: leaving other people a clear path to an exit, moderating the volume of your voice, limiting the expansiveness of your gestures as well as maintaining an appropriate physical distance.

Social Boundaries

Please respect the desires of a person or persons who have expressed their wish for no further contact.

Even though FENSF and MarsCon welcome vigorous debate, do not verbally attack people.

Be aware of consent to continue interaction with another person, observing non-verbal and verbal clues. Pay attention if the other party wishes to end the interaction. If there is any question whether the other party wants to end the interaction, end the interaction yourself.

Implementation

If a dispute regarding harassment arises at MarsCon, please inform MarsCon staff, who can contact the Bridge and the MarsCon Chair. The location of the Bridge is located in the pocket program, but staff can guide or accompany members who wish help. The incident will be documented by MarsCon staff and include one person to record the incident as well as a witness to the process.

The complainant can request a person of their choosing to serve as their own witness.

MarsCon Bridge Staff may temporarily revoke membership privileges pending review and action by the Con Chair in as timely a fashion as the Con Chair’s other duties allow. All details of the incident should be recorded and forwarded to the MarsCon Chair, who can require the offending party or parties to relinquish their membership badges for the remainder of the Convention or be banned permanently.

Any persons involved in a dispute at MarsCon should be aware that information will be kept on a need-to-know basis. This means the relevant information of the dispute will only be shared between pertinent parties, such as Bridge volunteers recording the information, the MarsCon Chair, the FENSF Board of Directors (up to and including the current President) as well as any outside authorities, as needed. FENSF and MarsCon cannot be responsible for the actions of other persons who may have witnessed the disputed act.

Anyone who is banned from the hotel or other facility where MarsCon is being held by the management of that facility must appeal the decision to the management of that hotel or facility, not to FENSF.

Membership badges are property of MarsCon, and if requested, must be surrendered to MarsCon staff. If a member feels relinquishing their badge is an issue, they can go to the Bridge (please refer to the pocket program for its location) and take the matter up with the MarsCon Chair in as timely a fashion as the Con Chair’s other duties allow.

Any decision of the MarsCon Con Chair can be appealed to the FENSF President, in writing, and the President will consider the appeal in as timely a fashion as other duties at the convention allow. The MarsCon Chair will inform the FENSF Board of Directors of revoked memberships as soon as possible after the close of MarsCon. The Board of Directors may take further action up to and including a permanent ban on all future FENSF-sponsored events, such as MarsCon.

Hotel Information

Regular check in/out times will apply. Check-in is after 4 pm, checkout is by 11 am. Guests staying at the hotel have full access to the pool, sauna, exercise room, etc. The hotel is smoke-free.

Lost and Found

We’ll have a Lost and Found box in the Bridge/Master Control (1st floor, near the hotel front desk), but we are not responsible for lost items. the Bridge will only hang on to found stuff briefly (half hour, give or take) then hand it over to the hotel front desk.

Pets

No pets are allowed in the convention areas. Pets are identified as animals that are not service or therapy animals. Proper registry and identification must be provided for service and/or therapy animals. If you want to keep a pet in your sleeping room, you must make arrangements with the hotel. For the comfort and safety of all MarsCon attendees, please leave your pet in your room. Working animals are not included in this policy.

Problem Attendees and Hotel Guests

Costume does not equal consent. No one should have to put up with stalkers, unwanted sexual attention, public displays of drunkenness, or other abusive behavior. We have Safety Team Volunteers roaming the halls (they can be identified by their brightly colored vests) to keep an eye on things and assist MarsCon attendees with security problems. Anyone subjected to unwanted attention should either contact the Bridge/Master Control, the Hotel Staff, or a Safety Tean Volunteer.

Smoking and Use of Fire

There is no smoking inside the Hotel. Also, no open flames (i.e., candles, lanterns, etc.).

Weapons

We define weapons to include real weapons (they do what they look like), facsimile weapons (they look real), anything actually used as a weapon, and anything an otherwise ignorant being would surmise is a weapon. Please adhere to the following policy, or risk being ‘uninvited’ from the convention, without refund from the convention or the hotel.

  • Use good judgment. [If you don’t have any, check with the Bridge] Even if it complies with the remaining rules, if it is unsafe or would reduce the enjoyment of others, please don’t do it.

  • No projectile weapons. If it is capable of projecting a solid, liquid, gas, or energy with enough force to annoy or destroy, it is a projectile weapon.

  • All weapons must be carried in a sheath, sling, or other container of some kind at all times except during photo shoots, Masquerade, and programming events where used. Use good judgment.

  • Peace-bonding is required on all weapons. If you don’t have it, we will. A ‘peace-bonded’ weapon is one secured into its sheath or container with a functional, but decorative binding. It prevents someone else from taking your weapon without permission, and it is a visible sign to everyone that you are a responsible person.

  • Targeting anyone with a laser sighting device is annoying, and considered assault.

  • Remember, all Federal, State and local laws apply in convention space.

  • Standard rules of ejection apply.

  • We reserve the right to be arbitrary, capricious, or unreasonable. In any dispute, the decision of MarsCon is final.
