(as published in PR-2)
Because of the nervousness of the general population and for the peace of mind of the other guests staying at the Airport Hilton, we regret that we need to make the following amendment to our Weapons Policy.
We ask that you do not wear or carry any realistic-looking or bladed weapons. (By realistic-looking we mean any toy gun or prop that would probably get you shot at by the Police if you waved it at them!) We will make an exception for costumes worn by participants during the Masquerade. We also request that any realistic-looking or bladed weapons bought in the Dealer's Room be stored away in a sleeping room or vehicle as soon as is reasonably possible after the purchase. If you are unsure if your prop weapon falls under this category, just present it at Ops and we will make that judgment for you.
This amendment is in addition to our usual Weapons Policy, which also prohibits projectile weapons (including squirt guns) and abuse with lasers. Please refer to the Policies section of your Program Book for full details of our Weapons Policy.
This restriction does not apply to those legally entitled to carry legal weapons (such as off-duty police) or to legal pocket knives, etc.
We certainly regret the circumstances that cause us to make this change to our Weapons Policy and hope in the future we can change the Policy back to the way it was prior to 9/11.
There will be a designated photography area immediately after the Masquerade.
The Hilton has agreed to let us book the entire 11th floor for room parties. Since it is so much less likely non-MarsCon-attendees will be surprised or puzzled by con costumes, the floor is designated an area for realistic-looking prop weapons. Bladed prop swords, etc., must be kept sheathed and peace bonded. See the party rules and guidelines for more information. Get thee to Ops before trooping off to the party floor; the friendly people there will assist getting your props safely peace bonded.
The following describes the philosophy guiding these policies:
We will not have weapons at Marscon. We have a lot of costumers that can have some rather realistic looking props. We have people who will wear a sheathed sword or sheathed knife, but if peace bonded, it becomes a realistic looking prop. Since a peace bond can be cut or removed, the overlaying policy is to create difficulty and delay from the time someone thinks about brandishing a realistic prop or unsheathing a bladed weapon, and the time that they can actually do it allowing for better judgment or intervention to prevail.
