MarsCon Masquerade Monthly Newsletter for August 2005

Late Breaking News

"The Marscon Masquerade Director is delighted to report that she is getting some help (No, not THAT kind of help. Medication and therapy just don't help my condition)".

"I mean that I have persuaded Nickie Luckes to help me. She is going to be my assistant, co-director, chief flunkey, whatever. I told her I'd call her anything she'd like. She said she likes "Masquerade fairy". So, please welcome Nickie, and feel free to call on her for any sort of Masquerade help and info. (Hmmmm, if I call myself the Masquerade Diva, would any male assistant be the Masquerade Deviant?)"

Hi, me again (who’s me? You know, that crazy costume lady you see at all the cons. I was channeling Edna Mode at last month’s CONvergence. Ohhhh, THAT crazy lady -- yah, that’s me)

Anyway, it’s time for my monthly rant and rave about the MarsCon Masquerade. Most of the info you’ll need is online already (masquerade registration, judging criteria and forms, and the masquerade and costuming related activities). Please (re)read my monthly newsletters for June and July for expanded description. The following is just a few notes (and reminders) for this month.

I NEED VOLUNTEERS

  1. I am looking for a few good DESIGNERS. We are constructing a folding backdrop for costume photos (to be used by Masquerade contestants and the general con-going public as well.). It will be 8’ high and each of 3 panels will be 2’ wide. It should be able to come apart for transport. We are looking for a generalized backdrop that can work with SF, Fantasy and Horror themed costumes. If you have any ideas, please e-mail me through the MarsCon website (masquerade--2006 mail addresses disabled ). If your idea is chosen, you will be acknowleged during the Masquerade on stage (but only if you want to).
  2. I am also looking for a few good JUDGES. Last year we had a problem with several of the guests of honor opting out of judging at the last minute. This year that won’t happen, as I plan on having local judges. Michelle Clark has already graciously agreed to be a judge, but I need at least 2 more. If you have competed frequently, and feel you can give us the benefit of your experience, please consider becoming a judge. We will certainly do our best to cosset and spoil you during the time you are with us. (See July newsletter for further info ... it involves crepes and cream, and more).
  3. The MASQUERADE LOUNGE, (located on the top floor down the hall from the ConSuite) is in need of volunteers. We will be open to the con-going public during the run of the con (except during the panels, and during the Judges Saturday morning brunch.) Volunteers will help con-goers with masquerade registration and also be keeping an eye on costume / portfolio displays, People with sewing/repair skills will be especially appreciated, as the Costume Emergency First Aid Station will be located there. (But you DON’T have to sew, etc. Most costumed people looking for help can usually do their own repairs, they just didn’t bring a hot glue gun, enough duct tape, etc.)

    ACTIVITIES

  4. Speaking of costume displays, there will be some space set aside to show off the work of area costumers. Each costumers is invited to display one mannequin and/or portfolio-photo book. Costumes echoing the con’s theme will be preferred. If interested, please contact me SOOOON. There isn’t that much display space, maybe 3-4 spaces , so first come, first served.
  5. Friday night the Masquerade staff will be hosting TWO panels. The first will be a discussion / demonstration on prop making. If you have done any prop making, please contact me. I am looking for panel members. Don’t have to be an expert, just have a little experience in constructing cool stuff.

If you need help on a particular item you’re working on, please feel free to bring it with, and ask advice. This panel isn’t so much the “experts” pontificating from on high, as a general discussion, giving and taking advice from everyone there. I’m looking forward to it, I’m sure to learn something.

The second panel will follow, and will be a general discussion on masquerade participation. There will be tips and advice on presentation, costuming techniques and sharing of stories (... like the time the dragon’s tail whacked one of the judges, ... that sort of thing). If you’ve never participated in a masquerade before, THIS PANEL IS FOR YOU! We’re here to help, and this panel will have lots of advice to share with you. If you’ve participated in costume contests for years, we need you too! We want lots of stories about what went wrong, and what went right! Come and share your experiences.

Any questions, feel free to contact me through the MarsCon website (masquerade--2006 mail addresses disabled ) or even by phone 612-722-8868 (just not before 10am please, I'm just not at all coherent before then, thanks, Rae)
