Hi, The DreamStitcher here (or as those involved in MarsCon 2006 know me, the crazy Masquerade Diva) with an update on the activities for the MarsCon 2006 Masquerade.
I took over the Masquerade for my first time last year, and I learned a lot. (Especially that we have some really talented people out there!). Learning from this experience, we want to do everything we can to encourage masquerade participation this year We've written up some guidelines for the next masquerade. Judging criteria at MarsCon Masquerade will be a bit different than at other cons. Scoring as been divided into two areas, Workmanship and Presentation. Workmanship Awards will be given out to recognize those terrific costumers out there who are, perhaps, too shy to get onstage themselves, but make great creations for others to wear. These talented people deserve recognition; hence the Workmanship Awards. Presentation Awards are a second area where extroverts can shine. Even if your costume is not the most fantastic, or the most perfectly put together creation, you can still gain points from the judges for sheer chutzpa! Get up there and knock 'em dead with your style.
Masquerade registration will be available at the Lounge (Room #1306). Why do we need to register, anyway? Because just rounding up costumed people, and herding them on stage just doesn't work too well. We are here to help you all LOOK GOOD, but we need your help to do so. Registration forms will ask for your name, the name of your costumer (if different), name of your character, group, etc. Any introductory remarks that you want the Master of Ceremonies to read will be written on the registration form and turned in, as well as any support materials (CDs, tapes, backgrounds, etc). Reference materials (such as pictures of your anime or comic book character) will be submitted along with your registration at this time. (Judges love having colored pictures of your character. It gives them something to compare to when judging. Judges don't always know every character out there). We will also try to accommodate any special needs you may have, but we have to know what they are. Which is why rehearsals are so necessary. It's just easier on you—and everyone else—if you know what's going on before you step on stage. Masquerade registration will be accepted at the Lounge until 4 pm Saturday, and mandatory rehearsal walk-throughs will take place between 6-7:45 pm in the Main Stage and Green Room (2nd floor). Participants won't have to sit through 2 hours of rehearsal, however. We'll ask only a few minutes of your time to walk you through your presentation. Then you will be free until 7:45 pm when all will assemble in the Green Room. Sign up for your rehearsal time slot when you submit your registration. One registration form per person or group.
There is further information on this website about the changes for the next Masquerade; a sample masquerade registration form, an example of the judging forms we will use, and the judging criteria as well. Lots of new information, so, please, read them online, so there will be no surprises when you get to the con. do not download the registration form and mail it to us. Fill out the registration form at the con, and hand it to us in person at the Masquerade Lounge.
We are again presenting the Masquerade 101 panel Friday evening, for those who have never entered a masquerade before. The panelists there will give you good advice — from how to walk on stage and impress people, to what not to do before or during masquerades (like fool around with other people's props, or drink way too much before you have to stand around — that sort of thing). Even if you have entered masquerades for decades, please attend anyway. We can all benefit from your experiences (and, besides, you can tell some cool stories about masquerades you've been in). We've also included a panel on prop construction this year. Have you ever seen a really cool weapon or headdress, and wondered "how did they do that?!" Well, we have, and we wanted to find out how to do it, too! If you have done any props/headpieces, etc. type of construction, please, Please, PLEASE, consider being on this panel. We'd love the chance to pick your brains! Contact me at masquerade--2006 mail addresses disabled .
This year we have something new, the Masquerade Lounge. It will be located on the 13th floor, Room #1306 down the hall from the ConSuite. There will be plenty of signs showing you the way, you can't miss us. Feel free to come up and hang out. Bring your costume designs and portfolios to share. There will be plenty of interested costumers about to discuss ideas with. The new (and hopefully permanent) MarsCon photo backdrop will be set up just at the end of the hallway next to the Lounge. So you can have a cool background to pose against for a really fantastic photo of yourself, your friends, anyone you happen to feel like shooting!
The Masquerade Lounge (when not in use for costuming panels, the Judges Brunch, or closed during the Masquerade and rehearsal) will be open to all the con-going public. It's a place to hang out during the day, especially with other costumers. A TV and DVD/VCR player will be available if you want to bring in movies to view and costume critique with other costumers. Costumers will be given the chance to exhibit their best work on mannequins in the Lounge. If you are a local costumer, and would like to display, please contact me soon. Space for one mannequin per costumer, please. Mannequins not provided, but table surfaces will be. Limited spaces, call me soon to reserve. Contact me at masquerade--2006 mail addresses disabled .
The Masquerade Lounge will be open after 10 am Friday and Saturday evenings as "Morticia's Garden Party", a quiet, relaxed, laid back party room. No smoking, no alcohol, no loud music (sorry, no sleeping under the tables). There will be some snack items, some REAL food, and lots of good conversation, costuming or otherwise.
The Costume Emergency First Aid Station will be located in the Masquerade Lounge. This is a free service for the costumed con-going public, although $ donations towards cost of materials will be much appreciated. If your wings are molting, or your rivets are popping, or your spandex is splitting, you can find repair materials, and usually experts to help you, at the Costume Emergency First Aid Station.
Judges are a special breed of con-goers. They willingly forgo the pleasure of the Masquerade half-time show to sequester themselves in a small, hot, usually airless room to deliberate and tally judging scores. We feel these magnificent people deserve some special pampering, and so we are hosting the first (and hopefully annual) Judges' Brunch on Saturday at 10 am. They will be plied with the most succulent of fruits, the most delectable of crepes and cream, the most fragrant of pastries. (It's actually a nefarious plot to get all the judges together to discuss judging criteria. But, hey, if it works to get them all in one room at the same time, we won't hesitate to cram crepes down their throats.) And, if you feel you have some experience in judging masquerades, or have gained experience by entering a number of costume contests, please volunteer to be one of that special breed — unless you really don't like being stuffed with crepes, and strawberries, and whipped cream. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call me or e-mail me. I am here to help you any way I can! (Just don't call before 10am, there is no intelligent life on this end of the phone line before then)
See you all at MarsCon 2006
