Program Ideas Page (2014 edition)
Programming will have some new, exciting space in which to play for 2014. Please share in the fun by posting your ideas for programming here—talks you’d like to hear or give, presenters/performers you would recommend, subjects or activities of interest to you and other fans…
If you’ve submitted ideas in years past you already know the plan: read the ideas list… if you see a program event you want to help with drop us an email. If you have an idea for an event that isn’t yet listed jump to the form and tell us about it. As always, MarsCon depends on our attendees for much of our programming. Thanks in advance for all of your wonderful suggestions.

Trees Throughout Time in the Science Fiction/Fantasy Realm
Fangorn Forest, Yggdrsil, and the Home Tree are just a few examples of forests and trees that have played a crucial role (either as a central character or significant supporting role) in many of the places we go in our imagination through books, movies, and games. Imagine your favorite stories and worlds without trees and forests. How about your real world? Letâ s talk about how trees have captured our imagination throughout time (and even beyond).

Human Combat Chess
For the past three years Six Elements Theatre has produced a new and fun show that we simply call Human Combat Chess. The same things are at plenty of Ren Fests around the country, but we gear it as a combination of modern sport and epic sword fighting.
We would be interested in bringing a few fights to Marscon this year to help drum up awareness for our event, and we would be willing to hold a small workshop of some kind if there was interest for that too.

My name is Judith B. Shields, and I am the producer/writer of an indie steampunk-light film called "Frankenstein's Monster". We have just started showing it at science fiction conventions. I think our film may be a great match because of the interest in costuming that many of your attendees have.
We may not be able to send someone with the film but we could however, arrange a SKYPE panel. Just let me know if this is something you would be interested in screening.

various
Privacy versus Security?
Is the NSA doing too much and invading your privacy? What about Google, Amazon.com, or the People's Republic of China. And given that there are like three filters before any human in the NSA looks at email content. is it really a problem or just media sensationalism. Also, in this day and age, does it make sense to distinguish between domestic and international intelligence, or is that just a handicap that could get someone blown up?
Minimalist Mars Missions;
How could we get someone to Mars (or at least Phobos) and back for less than hundreds of billions of tax dollars? And would it be worth it?
Shields up! Off to Mars!
How does electromagnetic radiation shielding work. Do we need it for travel to and staying on Mars? What's the statues of those "high" temperature superconductors that would make it more practical?
The SpaceX Tinkertoy Set; how to Build Crewed Space Missions from SpaceX parts.
The Falcon Heavy would put ten metric tons on an escape trajectory. That could include a fueled upper stage, a dragon-based spacecraft, and all sorts of other stuff. The dragon can land on any atmosphered planet and on a lot of bodies without atmospheres. You could mate a couple of Dragons at the opposite ends of a tube and spin the assembly for artificial gravity in route.
The Aerodynamic Spaceship; Artists' mistakes or Wave Riders of the Future?
Aerocapture was (and may still be, some places) dismissed out of hand because of perceived risk and difficulty in predicting atmosphere density; but precision landings on Mars are suggesting otherwise. Aerodynamic spacecraft could make orbit around planets with atmospheres with very little propellant. They could execute low propellant inclination change or orbit lowering maneuvers. Are any proposed NASA missions taking advantage of this? What about others. And what would an aerodynamic spacecraft really look like?
Growing Food in Space Stations and Space Colonies.
What's been done to date? Is Dwarf Wheat edible? What is space soil like? What does the future look (and taste) like?
Low Gravity Space Medicine;
Why are centrifugal gravities less than 1G important? Gary Hudson of the Space Studies Institute wants to test this in orbit before committing to colonies and long durations missions. Why? What would it take.
Space Colonies: The Ultimate Gated Communities.
Elysium not, but what might they be like? How would they be constructed? Would they be refuges for the one percent? Or dumping grounds for the lower 5%? Or that and everything in between. Would they be multibillion dollar investments or the cost of a few keystrokes to some space robot facility. Will the air-lock be a culture-lock as well?
The Space Singularity: Asteroid miners, 3D Printers, mechanical space spiders, intelligent (at least as smart as bees) robot workers, oh, my!
Is the game changing as we talk about it. How rapidly is technology getting ahead of science fiction. Do any of the SF space classics look like they might have gotten it right?
Solution Space: More than Spaceship Earth
What are some ways of using space resources to alleviate the environmental problems of worldwide rising expectations. Is there an environmentalist ideology that rejects any recognition of extraterrestrial resources (except sunlight) and will only listen to environmental solutions that require changes in human lifestyles. Will one actually have to fight environmentalists to save the Earth?
The Fermi Paradox in light of the Kepler Mission
Lots of planetary systems, not many (relatively) like ours. Remember Joan D. Vinge's Heaven Belt stories? It looks like there might be lots of that nearby and not much in the way of habitable worlds, at least not until the terraformers get to them. How far, in space and time, to the nearest Alien space colony?
Making POD work for the Independent Bookseller.
What's the problem and what can be done to fix it? How can authors help.
Integrating non-text media into ebooks.
Should authors be doing more of this? Is there an opening for more illustrated novels (as opposed to graphic novels). What about hyper-illustrating background material too detailed for the narrative? Are there any examples of this out there? Do they work?
Dull, realistic, characters.
The people who really explore space and fight modern wars have a lot of self control. They don't slam fists into spacecraft controls like Hulk Hogan. Do you have to forget about them in fiction, or can you make them interesting. And if your protagonist is like that do you just have to accept that critics will complain and press on in hopes of finding an audience that appreciates a little verisimilitude.
Games against Nature, or Technology
Does successful fiction have to have conflict with sentient antagonists? What are examples of stories everyone loves, fact and fiction, with no villains. Is interpersonal conflict overrated as a source of drama?
Asking your Published Author Friend for Help---or Not.
Hey would you read my novel? Well, first, he or she's (usually) not an editor, so does it really matter. Second, they may barely have time to write their own stuff. But then, maybe they'll be flattered, or you'll catch them at a good time, and the only sure way to get turned down is not to ask. What about discussing plot ideas? Cover blurbs? Forwards? When do you ask and what are the usual do's and don't. And, authors, what is a polite response?
Natural Laws versus Theoretical Models
What's the difference between the Lorentz transformation and Einstein's Theory of Relativity? Does "punctuated equilibrium" supplant Darwin's work, or extend it? Does the modification of a theoretical model mean someone was wrong and open the door for a "new paradigm" or is it almost always just a little tweaking (despite the press release)? How can a writer plausibly extrapolate science into the future?
The Press versus Science;
What are some of the greatest howlers? What's the most common kind of reportorial error? What happens when Scientists try to write their own press releases? What happens when institutional PR departments do it?
Book Length; a New Paradigm?
Despite the successes of J.K, Rowling and Tom Clancey, Has the best length for a book gotten smaller? In the new universe of ebook and POD, what are the advantages and disadvantages of a project of say 60,000 words versus 160,000?
Verse adverse? Embedded Song/Poetry Experiments
Can it work to put poetry or song lyrics in a textual tome? Should Heinlein have offered an appendix with a standard version for "The Green Hills of Earth." Does sticking your poem or song in lead to a greater reader experience? Or just an embarrassment?
Low Gravity Monsters,
How big could the native life be? Would transplanted Earth life (including people) get taller/bigger. How long would it take? What constraints are there besides the strength of bone and sinew? What would they look like and act like? Would they be slower, or only look slower?
