MarsCon 2007

Programming Ideas Page

It's worked for the past two years; let's do it again. If you have a great programming idea for MarsCon 2007 post it here (and let us know if you're willing to make it happen).

Read the list below, then add your ideas.

Everything Old is New Again: Star Trek Remastered
For the past few months, the old Star Trek episodes have been in syndication, but this time with a difference. The old optical effects and model work is getting a digital make over by the team at CSB Digital, in preparation for eventual HD release. What are the hits, misses, and fouls of the upgraded episodes?

Most Distressing: Aging and Weathering Models and Props
A squeaky-clean finish is great for something that's factory-fresh. But show me a factory-fresh X-wing! And an heirloom bat'leth without a few nicks? Do'Ha'! Join the Model Citizen for some hands-on tips about aging and weathering using a variety of techniques. Bring a model or prop of your own to work on if you want.

Space Elevator Update
Basic presentation and update with Q&A. The idea of a Space Elevator has been around for over a hundred of years; however, the technology to build such a remarkable structure has not existed until now. Recent advances in carbon nanotube echnology, robotics, and lasers now make the concept of the Space Elevator a viable engineering project.

I started a joke, which started the whole world laughing
Gary Jones is "an award wining playwright and Leo-nominated comedy writer". I write plays and comedy. Most of the Dementia artists write funny stuff designed to be performed on stage. Pathos as self-examination: Are we happier for making others laugh? What is this strange compulsion?

Teaching acting
They say "those that can, do. Those that can't, teach." Yet Don Davis gave up a career as an acting teacher to be a full time actor. The craft of acting from Davis, with examples, tips and memories.

World Famous Starving Artists
YouTube and other file sharing sites means that someone can be very well known but not make a dime out of millions of views. How do Dementia artists cope with fame but no money? What can be done to alleviate this condition? Is funny music doomed to be a hobby? Luke Ski, Ookla the Mok, etc.

Suggested by Baron Dave on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 00:07:52

Comic hero theme songs
Ookla the Mok has written several. Get them (or some of them) on a panel with others who know about comic hero theme songs, eg Earl Luckes or even me. I could moderate this one.

Breaking servers for fun and profit
A panel of geeks built around GoH Paul Graham. Most of us geeks delight in beating the computer system. Graham made a profession out of it. Where is the fun? What are the dangers? Why don't they pay hackers money for their pranks?

Suggested by Baron Dave on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 00:06:08

Stargate SG-1: Behind the scenes
A panel w/GoH's Don Davis and Gary Jones. Presumably, they will be doing some Mainstage presentations. This is a more informal panel with Q&A. Maybe include some SG fans on the panel, but not more than one or two, including moderator.

Delusions of Grandeur - Film
Delusions of Grandeur tells the humorous tale of four friends who are tied together by their comfortable lifestyles of delusion. Morlock (a Shut-in), Barry (a Klingon) and, The Kid (a Goth) all share an affection for fantasy lore and Sci-fi and live a life that revolves around fantasy gaming. Their friend Dean, a Punk Rocker and visionary filmmaker, hatches a plan to make a documentary about them winning the $15,000 prize at a local Magik tournament while his own prize would be most certain instant Sundance stardom. Dean realizes in the first 24 hours of shooting the documentary, though, that his friends and his concept will for sure put his audience to sleep, so he spices it by writing his own script. All chaos breaks loose as Dean attempts to sell the guys on a script that melodramatizes their lives and even attempts to re-enacts Barrys recent painful-therefore-not-to-be-spoken-about break-up with his girlfriend. Delusions of Grandeur stars local actors Jacobsen Hart as Dean, Christian Skelley as The Kid, David Talarico as Morlock and Rick Logan as Barry, with original music by local artists: itys, Morrison & Metzger, Ripsnorter, Jaharis Window, and High on Stress. Eccentric Pluto
The astronomers have decided recently that Pluto is too eccentric -- too little, too odd in its orbit -- and also too ordinary (way too many if the dwarfs recently discovered start getting counted) -- to be a planet. They suggest a new category of dwarf planet for Pluto. A pity? A good idea? No difference? What Pluto fiction stands out, and does getting put out of date diminish such stories?

Fight scenes in Spec Fic
Fight scenes are an almost necessary element in SF/F (both in film and print media). Why are these included? What do they bring to the story? What is the difference between real fights and good film or literary fights (what doesn't play out well on film or on paper)? What elements does a writer need to include and be able to do well, and what should a writer avoid? How does this differ from what can be done in film? What can go wrong with fight scenes?

Championing adaptations
There have been a number of adaptations to film in the last few years. Source material has varied from comics, graphic novels, novels and short stories, television, and even amusement park rides. There are some particular challenges when adapting from one medium to another, even in related media (TV to film or short story to novel). What are some examples of well done adaptations and why do these work where others fail or don't succeed quite as well? How do you defend what you feel to be an excellent adaptation in the face of the purist argument that it utterly failed to bring the story/spirit/world/or characters to the big screen?

Suggested by S.N.Arly on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 21:09:00

Artistic Inspiration
Authors and artists discuss what inspires them to write or create. What sorts of things spontaneously inspire you? What things do you seek out when you need inspiration? What doesn't work to jog or instigate inspiration? We've all heard of writers' retreats, is it possible to force inspiration? What squelches your enthusiasm (big picture - general things not specific tiny events or things)?
