INVASION!

Programming Ideas Page

MarsCon depends on you, the attendees, for much of our programming. This is the place to suggest possible program items for 2009. If you are willing to do the leg work behind your suggestion, wonderful! If you just want to add an idea, that’s great too.

Read the list below, then add your idea and/or drop us an email saying which event(s) already listed you would like to take part in.

"Meet the Weapons: Guns"
Firearms are mysterious and scary to a lot of people, and there is a lot of "firearms lore" out there which, while commonly accepted, just isn't true. To compound things, the way guns are depictied in movies and other media often defies reality. Learn everything you ever wanted to know about guns, the gun culture, design, safety, and tactics.

Sack Stories
A writing exercise that the audience takes part in: each person draws slips of paper from sacks that contain a protagonist's description (a pizza delivery guy, a unicycle rider, a psychic), a location, a plot point, and an opening line. Each audience member then has an hour to write a quick story that involves all of the things on their slips. At the end of the hour, writers can choose to read their glorious creations aloud to their fellow writers. Possibly, if budget permits, little prizes for funniest story / weirdest story / best serious story, plus a little candy bar or something for everyone who takes part. (Note: this idea is totally stolen from a panel at Starfest 2008, however the people running that panel noted that they were hardly the first people to do this kind of exercise and that if people wanted to take the idea and run with it at other cons, well, the more s.f. writing, the better!)

Happy Bicentennial, Edgar Allan Poe!
MarsCon made Poe (1809-1849) a Posthumous Guest of Honor a few years back, but we forgot to commemorate the occasion with a panel. Let's look at Poe's remarkably diverse contributions: founder of the detective story, codifier of the short story, founder of American literary criticism, unforgettable poet, early science fiction writer, science buff, philosopher, supreme master of the horror tale, and, after Ben Franklin, the second naughty US literary celebrity.

Also, business owners throughout Powderhorn and Philips are being encouraged to paint murals on the big blank walls -- murals to discourage graffiti are nothing new, but the nifty thing is that they're apparently being encouraged to paint murals related to their business. Mpls Art on Wheels
Minneapolis Art on Wheels is an on-going public arts initiative. We leverage advanced mobile technology to bring socially engaged art and technology into diverse communities. We aim to use the scale and diversity of access to our exhibitions to make the Twin Cities an international leader in socially engaged and technologically enhanced creative projects: Scale, in that we are able to produce moving images up to several hundred feet, outdoors, in public spaces; and diversity in that our emphasis of mobile devices (i.e. cellular phones) and gestural interaction with media (e.g. laser tag, real-time video tracking and gesture recognition) allows a wide audience to interact with mobile media. The project engages students in creative use of technology and materializes this engagement in the form of community outreach and temporary public art. see their web site at: http://minneapolisartonwheels.org/ article / video here: http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/12/minneapolis_art_on_wheels.html?CMP=OTC-0D6B48984890
