7:00 - 8:30 pm - Virtual Viewing. Film: The Last Man on Earth (b&w;
USA/Italy, 1964; 88 minutes)
Co-dirs.: Ubaldo B. Ragona, Sidney Salkow;
co-scr.: Richard Mattheson (as Logan Swenson). William Leicester;
co-scr – Italian version: Furio M. Monetti, Ubaldo Ragon;
from the 1956 novel I am Legend by Richard Matheson.
Cast:Vincent Price, Franca Bettoia, Emma Daniell, Umberto Raho.
In Richard Mattheson’s durable science fiction horror novel I am Legend a global plague has turned humanity into will-less beings who sleep by day and hunt by night, but who are opposed by a resourceful scientist (Price). The novel has inspired at least three direct adaptations and influenced the creation of the “Living Dead” sub-genre movie sub-genre, starting with director George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968). The Last Man on Earth, first and most faithful adaptation of Matheson’s novel, makes good atmospheric use of the film’s modest budget. The story is both creepy and compassionate. And Vincent Price, in a tremendous performance, almost carries the story single-handed.
