Happy New Year!!

Well, we have four months to go before MarsCon. It's time to register and get a hotel room if you haven't already, pass along those programming ideas so they make it into the Program Book, put the finishing touches on your costumes, and get involved with planning as it switches into high gear. But first...

Other News - On the first day of 2001, anonymous artists erected a 9 foot tall, rectangular black monolith, a la Arthur Clarke & Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey," in Seattle's Magnuson Park. Residents awoke to find the monolith atop Kite Hill. It drew crowds. But only two days later, the monolith had mysteriously vanished leaving only a broken-stemmed, red rose, a cement platform, and trace amounts of candle wax from a late night vigile, to mark its departure. The monolith has since resurfaced at a small, remote bird sanctuary called Duck Island, at Green Lake. Although the monolith's creators made no reference to the movie, the connection was clear to the crowds that gathered there in awe and wonderment, touching the monolith and, perhaps, searching for stars...

Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrick, you have left your mark, and we are very thankful for it.

Hotel Info - The Radisson South is now accepting reservations for sleeping rooms for MarsCon 2001. Call the Radisson at 952-835-7800 or 800-333-3333 and be sure to tell them youre with MarsCon to get the convention room rate. In addition, we will have pool-side cabanas available for groups or individuals hosting a party.

The room rates are...
South Tower (that's the tall one): $99/night + tax
North/Plaza Tower: $123/night + tax
Cabana rooms: $123/night + tax

Party Time!! - Many poolside party cabanas are still available, and individuals and groups who want a cabana may reserve one by contacting Malasondra through one of the methods listed below. You do not have to throw a party to get a cabana, though first priority will go to those who are throwing parties.

Malasondra will need to know when you are coming in, and whether you have a preference for 1st or 2nd floor. Cabanas need to be booked for the weekend, so although you do not need to throw a party in the room both nights, you must take the rooms for Friday and Saturday night. The deadline for cabana requests is April 23, 2001. Please contact MarsCon directly through one of the methods listed below if you wish to reserve a party cabana.

Registration Update - In recognition of the holidays, our $25 adult pre-registration deadline was extended to January 31, 2001, a date which is fast approaching. If you or someone you know wish to take advantage of the lower rate, make sure to send your registration by the cut-off date. Groups of 10 or more persons may also register as a group to get an additional $5 off per registration. For more details, please try this link to registration.

Charity Auction - For the third year in a row, our Charity Auction will benefit the Camp Heartland Project. This is a national organization, with a permanent campsite in Minnesota, dedicated to assisting children and families impacted by HIV and AIDs. Camp Heartland's website may be found at: http://www.campheartland.org. Anyone who wishes to donate items for the 2001 Charity Auction for Camp Heartland is encouraged to contact us by one of the methods listed below.

Upcoming ConCom Meetings - Here are dates & times for upcoming ConCom meetings. At ConCom Meetings we talk about the status of the convention and its various departments. We look to see what areas need help, what policies need to be set, and how closely we are following our deadlines and goals. If you want to know a lot about planning MarsCon, or if you want to volunteer for a particular department in advance of the convention, a ConCom Meeting is a good place for you to be. ConCom Meetings are held on Sunday afternoons at the Radisson South Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota, the same place where the convention is held. (Directions & other information about the Radisson South. Beware, the Radisson website has the wrong area code!) ConCom meetings are open to the public, and you are welcome to attend whether as a spectator or an active participant in planning the convention. The more the merrier!
