April 2001Dear Fen, Filkers, and other Friendly Folk, We're almost there. MarsCon is less than a month away! There's so much news, but not a lot of time to tell it all. Here's just a sample. See you all soon! Parties - The deadline for reserving a party cabana is ... gasp ... April 23rd! There are a couple cabanas still available, so it's not too late if you or someone you know wish to throw a party at MarsCon. Please contact Malasondra at 2001info@marscon.org or via one of the other methods listed below to reserve a cabana. Martian Music - The latest from programming is that MarsCon will be a very musical convention this year. Our Musical Guest of Honor Michael Liebmann will be bringing to us a great enthusiasm and emphasis on Filk singing. In addition, the Martian Music Room will host Karaoke and will be open the rest of the time for live performances by bands and individuals who wish to lend us their voices and musical talents. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside the door, so anyone can reserve a time to sing or play their musical instruments in the room. We will Drum Jam both nights of the convention. Our Dance this year will take place on Friday night, and John Allen (a volunteer!) will serve as the D.J. John plans to play a lot of SF / Fantasy-oriented music for the Dance. He will also be taking requests from attendees. But that's not all!! Live performances are planned by groups Vessel Celtic Rock and THE Nick Atoms as well, and a third band may be performing in one of our party rooms! Charity Auction for Camp Heartland - Join us as we once again raise money for Camp Heartland, a charity with a permanent campsite here in Minnesota which assists children impacted by HIV or AIDS. Camp Heartland enhances and enriches the lives of children infected with or affected by HIV / AIDS through year-round support, advocacy, recreational programs, and community AIDS-awareness efforts. See www.campheartland.com for more information. The auction will be in two parts this year -- Our Silent Auction will begin on Friday and conclude on Saturday, and our Voice Auction will take place on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. -- The Silent Auction, located in Cabana 202, will be open from 8:00 until 10:00 p.m. on Friday. You may place silent bids that evening or on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Silent bidding will close at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Any items receiving no bids and any items receiving four or more bids will be auctioned away at the Voice Auction on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Items receiving 1-3 bids will be available for purchase and pickup by the highest bidders between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in Cabana 202, or during the Voice Auction on Sunday. Auction donations include the following items:
An asterisk (*) placed next to an item indicates the donor wishes that the proceeds be given to FenSF, Inc., for use in running MarsCon. Proceeds from the sale of all other items will be donated to Camp Heartland. Other items to be auctioned may include items provided by guests and others at the convention. We welcome your donations, and will gladly accept any and all donations up until the start of the Voice Auction on Sunday morning. Please see Ops in Cabana 201 if you wish to make a donation during the convention. Dealers wishing to bid on items in the Voice Auction may notify Auction Coordinator Christine LaBounty (before the Auction) of the maximum bid which they would be willing to make to secure the item. A runner will notify the Dealers Room of winning bids made by each Dealer. We would like to thank all the groups and individuals who have contributed to the 2001 Charity Auction. Many thanks to Sybil Smith, Patti Keiper, the Source: Comics & Games, the Telescope Shoppe, Blanche Hanson, Wayne McCloud, Anna Everling, Jolene Hardy, the WhiteStar Phoenix, and everyone who makes contributions after the posting of this message...as well as everyone who participates by placing bids!! Upcoming Concom Meetings - Here are dates & times for upcoming ConCom meetings and other events. ConCom Meetings are held on Sunday afternoons at the Radisson South Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota, the same place where the convention is held. ConCom meetings are open to the public, and you are welcome to attend whether as a spectator or an active participant in planning the convention.
Hope to see you there! |
